Staff Inspector Brian Fazackerley
S/Insp. Fazackerley leads a team of 66 officers and two civilian employees in this policing jurisdiction that covers the Township of Brock, the Township of Scugog and the Township of Uxbridge.
Bounded by York Region to the west, Lake Simcoe to the north and the City of Kawartha Lakes in the east, North Durham encompasses over 1,200 square kilometres and comprises about 50 per cent of the land mass of Durham Region.
With a combined population of approximately 60,000 in 2006, North Durham accounted for eight per cent of all Calls for Service handled by the Durham Regional Police. One of the greatest challenges involves covering the geographical distances. For example, officers in North Durham travel about one million kilometres per year attending calls for service. In order to improve service, store front offices are located in Beaverton and Uxbridge.
Although almost exclusively rural in nature, there are many growing urban communities in North Durham, including Uxbridge, Port Perry, Cannington, Sunderland and Beaverton. The population also significantly increases in the warmer weather when cottagers and snowbirds return to their waterfront communities.
In addition to regular patrols, during the winter months North Durham officers are responsible for providing patrol on approximately 1,100 kilometres of snowmobile trails. This is done in co-operation with the provincial S.T.O.P. officers, who also are authorized as Provincial Offences Officers. This is in addition to summertime patrol of the Oak Ridges Moraine and Ganaraska Forest area on ATVs and marine patrols on Lake Scugog and Lake Simcoe.
The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation near Port Perry is also host to one of two casinos in the Region, the Great Blue Heron Charity Casino. The existence of the Casino has increased the traffic flow greatly in the area, but the casino has proven to be a good corporate citizen in working with our police service.
There are three municipal councils and Mayors along with the Chief and Band Council of our First Nation who work closely with our officers to ensure that there is adequate and effective policing in Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge Townships.
For any traffic concerns in your neighbourhood, please contact Constable MacDuff by phone at (905) 579-1520 ext.2668 or by email at dmacduff@drps.ca.
