DRPS Youth in Policing students recently completed diversity training in workshops facilitated by the Harmony Movement.
Harmony Movement was formed in 1994 as a not-for-profit organization to battle inter-racial intolerance and to confront the “us versus them” attitude which was prevalent in Canadian society. Their mandate is to promote diversity and to combat all forms of discrimination that act as social and cultural barriers to Canadian citizens’ full participation in civil society.
Jennifer Hartman, from the Harmony Movement has been facilitating all workshops with the students. The lessons allow students to reflect on their personal goals, struggles and biases and realize the effects of stereotyping and discrimination on our community. The ultimate goal of these workshops is to empower the students to become active and positive agents of change.
The Youth in Policing students are taking what they have learned from their experience with Harmony and creating their own workshops for younger students ages 9-12. These lessons give the YIP students an opportunity to expand their leadership skills by mentoring younger students in the community and inspiring them to become leaders within their schools and community. Topics for these lessons include: “What it means to be a Canadian,” “Overcoming Peer Pressure” and “Eliminating Prejudice.” The student workshops will be presented at the Eastview Boys & Girls Club in Oshawa on Friday, August 8, 2008.
