The Freedom of Information Police Network Conference (FOIPN), hosted for the first time by the Durham Regional Police Service, began Monday, October 4 at the Holiday Inn in Oshawa. Approximately 100 Police Freedom of Information Co-ordinators, Analysts and Clerks are in attendance, coming from all areas across Ontario.

The guests were given a formal welcome Monday morning with opening remarks from Chief Mike Ewles, Chair of the FOIPN Darlene Shepherd from Hamilton Police Service and Vice-Chair Lisa Wright from DRPS.

The conference’s guest speakers will address common concerns the co-ordinators, analysts and clerks share, including:
• Fees
• Routine Disclosure/Active Dissemination
• Processing Requests
• Criminal Record Searches
• The Digital Trail
• Privacy Issues

The three-day workshop starts with a one day beginner course followed by two days of hands-on case studies, a Regional Meeting, and special guest speakers, including the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner/Ontario, the Ministry of Community and Social Services and members of the Police Legal Advisors Committee.

“The conference is an excellent way for us to build on our existing partnerships, utilize each other’s best practices and to help us move forward with emerging technology,” said Chief Ewles.
