Local Citizens Honoured By Police

Citizens of Durham Region were recognized May 18 for their quick action and assistance to police at the Durham Regional Police Service's annual Citizen Awards.

Chief Constable Mike Ewles, Regional Chair Roger Anderson and local mayors, presented awards to 19 citizens who chose to take action to assist others, putting their own safety at risk. The recipients are from various municipalities in Durham. The ceremony was held in the Council Chamber at Regional Headquarters in Whitby.

Recipients this year included a young girl who found her mother in distress in the bath tub. She managed to call 911 for help and hold her mother's head above water until paramedics arrived.

Another group of citizens alerted a family to a fire in their Whitby home and provided shelter and warmth in their vehicle while fire officials arrived.

DRPS also honoured a York Regional Police officer who came across a motor vehicle collision and pulled the victim from his vehicle with no vital signs. The officer was able to revive the victim only to lose him two more times before the paramedics arrived. The victim was stabilized and rushed to hospital.

Each year, Durham Regional Police members nominate citizens from the community for their assistance.

Thank you and congratulations to all recipients!
