The Durham Regional Police Service has pledged its full support of “One Man at a Time,” a new YWCA initiative that will encourage men to lead the fight against domestic violence.
YWCA Durham is seeking 1,000 men to take the One Man at a Time pledge: to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and children. As well as validating his pledge with a personal donation, Deputy Chief Scott Burns attended the launch of the initiative and expressed the full support of the DRPS. He also announced the DRPS has created a new Domestic Violence Offender Management Unit consisting of three full-time officers managing high-risk domestic offenders.
“It is my privilege to express Durham Regional Police’s collective support for this important campaign and to raise awareness that domestic violence continues to be a serious issue in our society,” said Deputy Burns. “Approximately 85 per cent of our violent arrests are from male offenders, and One Man at a Time reaffirms that this trend simply cannot be tolerated."
