With nice weather, more motorcycles have been seen on the road but in light of recent tragedies, DRPS wants to remind motorcyclists to make sure that bikes are road ready and all rules are obeyed.
Before you start your engines, consider the below safety tips:
• An approved, undamaged helmet must be worn at all times; failure to do so is in violation of the Highway Traffic Act. Riding gear should also be worn such as a jacket with shoulder and elbow padding, leather gloves, leather pants and boots to protect you in case of a collision.
• Check the tires and wheels thoroughly to ensure the pressure is correct after the winter. Motorcycles are required to have two (front and rear) brakes. Mufflers should be in good condition so they do not make unnecessary noise or smoke and, like any vehicle, the engine oil and fuel levels should be checked before you ride your motorcycle.
While driving, be aware:
• Not all motorists may see you so approach intersections with caution. Check over your shoulder and leave space between your bike and other vehicles. Headlights and rear lights must always be on and if turn signals do not work properly, you must use hand signals.
• Alcohol should never be consumed during or prior to operating any vehicle, including a motorcycle. Alcohol drastically impairs your judgment and if convicted of driving under its influence, the penalty for a first offence is a licence suspension of one year, subjection to the Ignition Interlock Program and a $1,000 fine.
• Over half of motorcycle accidents are caused by speeding. Always obey the speed limit, watch the signs and observe road conditions with care.
DRPS wants motorcyclists to be cautious and safe while driving to avoid serious collisions and fatalities, and to remind all motorists to be aware of their surroundings and to keep an eye out for all others sharing the road.
