|More than 350 people picked up their golf clubs, and their wallets, in support of the 2nd Annual Ontario Police Memorial Golf Tournament on Aug. 30 at Deer Creek in Ajax. |
The Durham Regional Police and Tim Hortons partnered up to host the fundraiser, raising $30,000 for the Ontario Police Memorial Foundation. The foundation was created to honour Ontario police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and they host a Ceremony of Remembrance at Queen’s Park on the first Sunday in May each year.
Officer Matt Hanes from Bracebridge OPP generously donated $10,000 from a cycling fundraiser held last month. Matt also hosts a golf tournament, to be held on Sept. 23, 2011, on behalf of his police partner, Cst. Andrew Potts, who was killed in the line of duty six years ago.
“Last year we were amazed at the generosity of everyone involved,” said Detective Constable Terry Rayner, co-organizer of the event. “But to double the amount of money raised this year is just astounding.”
It was a perfect day, as the over 300 golfers competed in longest drive, closest to the pin and putting competitions. There was even a car on the line for the ever elusive hole in one, but it remained unclaimed. The winning foursome shot an amazing -13 and consisted of Rick Dunn, Don Stark, Greg Deeth and Greg Gummer from the Region of Durham.
Special thanks go out to Wendy Brown and Durham Region Tim Hortons' franchisees, along with Detective Constable Terry Rayner, and Detective Constable Victor Alves for all their hard work and dedication that brought this tournament to fruition. Also, without the support of all of the corporate sponsors and team of volunteers, the tournament would not have been the great success that it was.
Mark your calendars for next year’s event, which has been set for August 29, 2012. If you are interested in being a corporate sponsor or would like to book a foursome for the 3rd annual tournament, please contact Terry Rayner at firstname.lastname@example.org.
