Shredding Day Kept Identity Thieves Away
25-Oct-2011 14:15 PSTBack | Print Article

Despite the cold, windy and rainy conditions, about 200 citizens participated in Shredding Day held by the Durham Regional Police and Super-Shred over the weekend.

The mobile shredding truck provided by Super-Shred was located at the parking lot of OLG Slots in Ajax on Saturday morning and then switched to the Oshawa Shopping Centre parking lot on Saturday afternoon.

The turnout was impressive as waves of citizen brought old receipts, old tax returns and other personal information to be shredding in a confidential and safe way. We strongly recommend that you shred any paper with your personal information on it -- do not leave it in your recycling boxes.

Those who participated were asked to make a donation to the DRP's charity of choice, Special Olympics Ontario and approximately $1350 was raised.

Experts from the DRPS on Crime Prevention were on hand to meet with citizens and share information about how they can protect themselves from identity theft and other crimes. All of the interactions were very positive and numerous citizens requested Shredding Day take place more times each year.
