More than 5,000 Grade 5 students from the Durham District and Durham Catholic School Boards are joining the race against drugs this week.
The popular Racing Against Drugs (RAD) program teaches kids the dangers of drug use through interactive and informative displays or "pit stops." The event goes from April 30 to May 4 at Iroquois Park in Whitby, and is coordinated by the RAD Committee, which includes DRP, OPP and RCMP members.
Racing Against Drugs is an interactive and educational program designed to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle for kids in cooperation with different agencies, such as community police offices and health professionals. Since 1998, Racing Against Drugs has taken its message to over 50,000 students.
The arena will be set up for various activities known as “Pit Stops”. Some of the pit stops will teach kids about the effects of alcohol when walking or driving, while others will demonstrate what it is like to be inside a rolling vehicle.
Emphasis on healthy activities such as sports and the arts are also promoted throughout the event.
