Spring Prom celebrations are a few months away and our 4th Annual Gowns for Girls event is in need of dresses, shoes, hairstylist services, make up and costume jewelry. Gift cards for services such as hair styling, manicures and make-up application are also being accepted.
Gowns for Girls provides young women with the resources they need to attend their Spring Prom. Many do not have the economic resources needed to attend as some dresses can cost upwards of $600.
The initiative began in 2014 by Constable Joylene MacNeil, a Youth Officer in Oshawa. She says the event helps make prom night special for hundreds of girls across the region. "Prom and Graduation is a milestone event for every girl. The Gowns for Girls program helps to build confidence both inside and out thanks to the generous donations from our Community."
The first year there were 75 young ladies who came to the event, in 2015 it grew to 400 girls and in 2016 approximately 500 girls came through the doors! "The many smiles and tears of happiness witnessed and some of the heartfelt stories we were entrusted with made all the efforts worthwhile," says Cst. MacNeil. "The event impacted these young women's lives in such a positive way."
The 4rd Annual Gowns for Girls event will take place Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at Bobby Orr Public School, 7 Waterloo Street, Oshawa. It runs from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m.
Organizers are now accepting donations. Please bring your new or used dresses, shoes, accessories and costume jewelry to any of our five DRPS police stations, or One Dream Bridal at 1416 Hwy 2 in Courtice.
