Cramming Cruisers for a Good Cause

May 17, 2017 11:04 ET

Students and staff at schools across Durham Region helped members of DRPS cram their police cruisers with non-perishable food items for the Cram-a-Cruiser JUST GIVE Food Drive, hosted by the Michael "Pinball" Clemons Foundation.

The local schools were challenged to collect enough food donations to fill a police cruiser. DRPS and seven other police services in Southern Ontario were involved. Last year, the event saw more than 444,000 lbs. of food collected for local food banks. This campaign was designed to inspire kindness through our communities by filling the food banks for the summer, at a time when they are usually empty. Not only is food donated at the schools, but the Foundation arranges for businesses to match donations, making the giving spread even further to those in need.

Csts. Ryan Mintz, Rebbecca Ruttan, Amy Jackson and Jason Cockburn attended Meadowcrest Public School in Brooklin today to fill not just one but three cruisers full of donations. The school donated more than $1,000 worth of food. Over the past few weeks, students have brought in donations to the schools and the Girl Talk group of Grade 7s fundraised money to make bulk purchases of basics like baby formula, peanut butter and cereal.

Together, students and staff across the Region donated thousands of pounds of food items to help those in need in our community. Other schools involved included: Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute, Bellwood Public School, Bowmanville High School, Captain Michael Vandenbos Public School, Meadowcrest Public School, Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, Sir Albert Love Catholic School, St. John Paul II Catholic School, St. Josephine Bakhita Catholic Elementary School, St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School, St. Patrick Catholic School, St. Wilfred Catholic School, St. Joseph Catholic School and Sir John A MacDonald Public Schoool.

The donated food was taken to Feed the Need in Oshawa. For more information about Feed the Need visit http://feedtheneedindurham.ca/ and for Just Give visit https://www.justgive.ca/
