Three Suspects Charged in Alleged Grandparent Scam Crime Ring

Three Suspects Charged in Alleged Grandparent Scam Crime Ring

Three male suspects are facing numerous charges for their participation in a crime ring targeting seniors in Durham Region and across the GTA.

Investigators from the DRPS Financial Crimes Unit are examining more than 70 incidents of “Grandparent Scams” across the region. In each case, the senior victim received a phone call from a person purporting to be a lawyer for their grandchild. The suspect would tell the victim their grandchild had been involved in a car accident injuring a pregnant female, and $9,000 was required as bail. The suspect would then arrange for a “bondsman” or courier to attend the home to pick up the money. After the money was received the senior victim would receive another phone call advising the female and/or baby had died and more money would be required.

Investigators have connected the three suspects to several incidents in Durham Region dating back to September of 2021.

Daniel KARASIRA, age 20, of North York, is charged with Participate in a Criminal Organization; Fraud Over $5,000 x4 and Possession of Proceeds of Crime x2.

Usman OYENEYE, age 24, of Newmarket, is charged with Participate in a Criminal Organization; Fraud Over $5,000 x3; Possession of Proceeds of Crime x1 and Fail to Comply with Undertaking.

Jahmal HERBERT, age 20, of Scarborough, is charged with Participate in a Criminal Organization; Fraud Over $5,000 x2 and Possession of Proceeds of Crime x2.

A photo of KARASIRA and OYENEYE are being released as investigators want to ensure there are no further victims.
