2026 Basketball Tournament for Special Olympics
On Saturday, February 7th, Durham Regional Police Service’s Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative hosted its annual Basketball Tournament for Special Olympics.
The event welcomed young athletes from across Durham Region and used basketball as a way to promote teamwork, collaboration, and community connection. Through interactive activities led by YIP Students and DRPS Members, athletes were encouraged to build confidence, develop skills, and contribute positively to their communities.
The tournament welcomed more than 170 attendees, including YIP Students, athletes, and their families. The event was also supported by DRPS Auxiliary Members and DRPS Officers, who joined in the action by playing alongside the teams and cheering on the athletes throughout the day.
The day began with inspiring opening remarks from Superintendent Ryan Connolly, setting the tone for teamwork and camaraderie. Athletes rotated through games and activities before the tournament concluded with an exciting final matchup between the two finalist teams, showcasing their skills and sportsmanship. The event wrapped up with an awards ceremony celebrating the athletes’ achievements, followed by the presentation of participation certificates recognizing their effort and engagement.
Thank you to everyone who attended and dedicated their time to supporting and encouraging our athletes at this impactful event. A heartfelt thank you is also extended to the DRPS Youth in Policing Team for their dedication and hard work in making this tournament a continued success.
