Sworn and civilian roles follow the Collective Bargaining Agreements between the Durham Regional Police Services Board and the Durham Regional Police Association. 

For Constables, the 2019 Collective Bargaining Agreement outlines the following annual salaries: 

  • Constable in Training           $65,213
  • PC 4th class                         $72,235
  • PC 3rd class                         $80,262
  • PC 2nd class                        $90,294
  • PC 1st class                         $100,327

Benefits

  • No waiting period for benefits; effective date is the first day of full-time employment
  • Vision care is covered up to $325 every two years
  • Hearing aids are covered up to $500 every five years
  • Dental checkups are covered every nine months for adults, six months for children
  • Orthodontia coverage $2,500 lifetime maximum coverage per child

Pension

  • All members contribute to the OMERS pension fund
  • There is no waiting period for pension contribution; effective date is the first day of full-time employment

All new recruits will receive a substantial amount of training to adequately prepare them for the duties of a Police Constable.

Upon offer of employment, new recruits will be required to attend the DRPS Police Learning Centre for two weeks of training.

Upon completion, recruits are sent to Ontario Police College in Alymer, ON for an intensive 3 month Constable training program.

Once recruits have completed OPC, recruits will return to the DRPS Police Learning Centre for further specific training including Problem-Based Learning concepts.

When a recruit has completed all required training and is sworn in as a 4th Class Constable they are partnered with a Patrol Training Officer.

Some of the training that is included is:

  • Criminal Code of Canada and other Statutes
  • Firearms Training
  • Use of Force
  • Community Policing
  • Search and Seizure
  • Driver Training
  • Report Writing
  • Interviewing Techniques

First Class Constables will be hired at First Class

Second, Third and Fourth Class Constables will be hired at the same rank and only complete a minimum of six months with our Service before their existing step-up date is recognized

When you join the sworn ranks of DRPS, you open the door to many possible career pathways. 

Starting out as a Police Constable, DRPS offers diverse opportunities to learn and advance. Every shift, Constables make a positive impact on the community they serve. As you move through your career, you will be given a variety of education opportunities to pursue. Front-line specializations include: Scenes of Crime Officer, Breath Tech, Sexual Assault Response Officer, Coach Officer, K-9 Officer, etc. 

Should you choose to pursue a promotion, there are skill augmentations that can introduce you to other ranks and assignments in the service. You will be introduced to the promotional process and supported by your supervisor as you explore your options, such advancement to specialty units including Criminal Investigations Branches, Tactical Services, Drug Enforcement, Surveillance, Training Instructor, etc.

The rank structure of the DRPS is: 

  • Constable
  • Sergeant/Detective
  • Staff Sergeant/Detective Sergeant
  • Inspector
  • Superintendent
  • Deputy chief
  • Chief

No matter the path you decide to take, you will gain a wealth of experience in a dynamic career.

All members, both sworn and civilian are encouraged to be life-long learned. Funding assistance for approved college and university courses is provided and there is a wide variety of internal training opportunities, both mandatory and elective, including the Certificate in Police Leadership (CPL), through the Police Education and Innovation Centre (PEIC). Support is provided when applying for internal positions at all levels.
