How the Program Works

Crime Stoppers is a non-profit, community based program, that pays cash for anonymous crime tips. The program encourages the public to communicate information regarding criminal activity. Crime Stoppers will share this information with the police or other agencies to assist with their investigations.

When you call Crime Stoppers you will be assigned a special code number. Your call will never be traced or recorded, and Crime Stoppers does not use call display. You will be known only by your code number. If your information leads to a charge or an arrest, you may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.

The Success of Crime Stoppers

Since its inception in April, 1986, Durham Regional Crime Stoppers has been responsible for the arrest of over 4,000 criminals resulting in over 12,000 charges and the clearing of over 4,100 criminal cases. These cases have led to the recovery of over $7 million dollars in stolen property and the seizure of over $85 million dollars in narcotics.

The success of this program is found in its unique partnership with the public, news media and the police. A group of community minded citizens comprise the volunteer Crime Stoppers Board. The Board is responsible for the administration and operation of the Crime Stoppers program in Durham Region.
