2026 Operation GIVE: YIP Students Donate More Than 3,400 Essential Items

The Durham Regional Police Service’s Youth in Policing (YIP) team marked an important milestone this week as students wrapped up the final day of Operation GIVE, donating an impressive 3,444 essential items to Simcoe Hall Settlement House.

Operation GIVE—short for Giving Individuals Valuable Essentials—has become a signature initiative within the YIP program, empowering students to make a meaningful impact in their communities. Each year, Youth in Policing participants work to raise awareness, inspire engagement, and support local organizations that provide critical assistance to Durham residents.

This winter, students in the 2025–26 YIP program took a creative and collaborative approach to their collection efforts, rallying support from family members, friends, and community partners. Their work not only filled donation bins—it strengthened relationships and built greater awareness of the ongoing need in Durham Region.

Beyond gathering essential items, YIP members also rolled up their sleeves to support Simcoe Hall directly. In December, students volunteered at the organization’s donation centre, gaining hands‑on experience in community service. The shift allowed them to support families in real time while developing leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. Students will return in March to assist Simcoe Hall with its annual March Break Camp.

To celebrate the success of Operation GIVE, YIP students and the program’s leadership team hosted an educational and interactive event, featuring station‑based learning activities designed to encourage reflection, teamwork, and community-building. The initiative was made possible thanks to the enthusiasm, planning, and dedication of both students and staff.

The Youth in Policing Program is now accepting applications for the 2026 Summer Initiative. Programs like Operation GIVE highlight the positive impact young people can make when given the tools, mentorship, and opportunity to lead.
