- If there are any injuries/unsafe conditions – immediately call 9-1-1 when safe to do so.
- If no injuries and the vehicle is drivable, pull off the roadway and avoid obstructing traffic.
- Assess the degree of damage to the involved vehicles.
- Exchange driver/vehicle information (names, address, phone number, insurance, vehicle information – licence plate).
- Take pictures/videos of involved vehicles/scene.
- If there are any witnesses, get their contact information.
- Report the collision with as much details as possible to CRC – if the vehicle can be driven, visit the CRC within 48 hours. If the vehicle requires a tow – transport to CRC immediately (if during operating hours).

What to do if you are involved in a collision
When should I report a collision?
- If damage is over $5,000 combined, you need to report a collision to the CRC within 48 hours
- You are not required to report any collision to the CRC where there is minor damage under $5,000 combined (contact your insurance company for options).
In any of the situations outlined below, follow the direction of an officer:
- Significant injuries/death
- A Pedestrian/cyclist is involved
- Uncooperative drivers
- Property damage that poses safety concerns
- Collision with criminal activity/impaired operation/no insurance/suspended drivers
- Significant traffic obstructions
- Fail to remain (hit and run) accidents
- Federal/provincial/municipal vehicles
- Hazardous/dangerous material transportation

What happens when police respond to a collision
When officers respond to a collision:
- All driver and vehicle information is taken
- Officers will assess the value of total damage – Over/Under $5000
- Drivers are given an accident report number to provide to their insurance company
- Police will ensure all information is accurate and up-to-date
- If needed for insurance/legal reasons – the police generated report will contain all involved drivers/vehicle information

To report a collision outside Durham Region, please contact the police service responsible for that area.
If your collision has occurred on a 400-series highway (Highway 401, 412 and 418) please contact the Ontario Provincial Police.
What to know if your vehicle needs to be towed
If your vehicle needs to be towed, follow these steps:
- Choose a towing service
- You have the option of choosing a police supplied tow service (set rate) or private/personal tow company (no set rate)
- Ensure you confirm the tow rate of your vehicle before the vehicle is hooked-up to the tow truck
- Your vehicle can be transported to your home, a mechanic facility, or to the tow truck’s yard for temporary storage
