What to know if you are involved in a motor vehicle collision

  • If there are any injuries/unsafe conditions – immediately call 9-1-1 when safe to do so.
  • If no injuries and the vehicle is drivable, pull off the roadway and avoid obstructing traffic.
  • Assess the degree of damage to the involved vehicles.
  • Exchange driver/vehicle information (names, address, phone number, insurance, vehicle information – licence plate).
  • Take pictures/videos of involved vehicles/scene.
  • If there are any witnesses, get their contact information.
  • Report the collision with as much details as possible to CRC – if the vehicle can be driven, visit the CRC within 48 hours. If the vehicle requires a tow – transport to CRC immediately (if during operating hours).

  • If damage is over $5,000 combined, you need to report a collision to the CRC within 48 hours 
  • You are not required to report any collision to the CRC where there is minor damage under $5,000 combined (contact your insurance company for options).

In any of the situations outlined below, follow the direction of an officer:

  • Significant injuries/death
  • A Pedestrian/cyclist is involved 
  • Uncooperative drivers
  • Property damage that poses safety concerns
  • Collision with criminal activity/impaired operation/no insurance/suspended drivers
  • Significant traffic obstructions
  • Fail to remain (hit and run) accidents
  • Federal/provincial/municipal vehicles
  • Hazardous/dangerous material transportation

Call 9-1-1 for emergencies, or 1-888-579-1520 for non-emergency situations. 

When officers respond to a collision:

  • All driver and vehicle information is taken
  • Officers will assess the value of total damage – Over/Under $5000
  • Drivers are given an accident report number to provide to their insurance company
  • Police will ensure all information is accurate and up-to-date
  • If needed for insurance/legal reasons – the police generated report will contain all involved drivers/vehicle information
Did the collision happen outside of Durham Region?

To report a collision outside Durham Region, please contact the police service responsible for that area.

If your collision has occurred on a 400-series highway (Highway 401, 412 and 418) please contact the Ontario Provincial Police.

What to know if your vehicle needs to be towed

If your vehicle needs to be towed, follow these steps:

  • Choose a towing service
  • You have the option of choosing a police supplied tow service (set rate) or private/personal tow company (no set rate)
  • Ensure you confirm the tow rate of your vehicle before the vehicle is hooked-up to the tow truck
  • Your vehicle can be transported to your home, a mechanic facility, or to the tow truck’s yard for temporary storage

  • A Collision Reporting Centre (CRC) is a facility in Durham Region where people can report motor vehicle collisions where the damage to both vehicles exceeds $5000.

  • The vehicle involved in the collision
  • Driver's Licence
  • Vehicle Permit (Ownership)
  • Proof of Insurance
  • Information exchanged with the other driver
  • Witness information (if applicable)

  • The accident report will be completed.
  • An officer or representative will ask for your documents, including your licence, vehicle permit, and insurance slip. 
  • Damage to your vehicle will be assessed and photographs may be taken.
  • Police supplied ‘damage reported’ stickers may be used on the vehicles.
  • The accident report number, along with the involved officer's name will be given to you at the end of the process - for your personal records and to be given to your insurance provider.

  • Please allow for 30-60 minutes for any accident report details to be completed at the CRC.

  • A collision must be reported in person at the CRC for a police accident report to be generated.
  • Photos, video, and statements from involved parties may be taken by officers and required for the report.

  • If you are involved in a situation where your vehicle is struck and the other party does not remain (hit and run) please contact 9-1-1.
