DRPS Unveils Location of New Ajax Division
Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), alongside the Durham Regional Police Service Board (DRPSB) and community partners, today unveiled the future location of the new Ajax Division, marking an important milestone in expanding policing services to meet the needs of Durham Region’s growing communities.
The new division will be located at 1401 Harwood Avenue North and represents the first step toward delivering a dedicated police facility in Ajax. Once complete, the division will bring frontline operations, investigators, and support services closer to residents, improving response, strengthening community engagement, and aligning police infrastructure with population growth.
“This unveiling represents a critical investment in our future and in the safety of our communities,” said Chief Peter Moreira, Durham Regional Police Service. “Ajax and Pickering continue to grow at a rapid pace, and this new division will ensure policing services are positioned where they are needed most—today and for years to come.”
Currently, both Ajax and Pickering are served by West Division in Pickering, which was built in 1992 for a much smaller population of 127,000. Since that time, Ajax and Pickering’s population has more than doubled, and calls for service have increased accordingly. The new Ajax Division is intended to better align policing services with current and future community safety needs.
“We are extremely proud to achieve our long-standing goal of building a brand new police station right here in Ajax,” said Shaun Collier, Chair of the Durham Regional Police Services Board and Mayor of Ajax. “The new Police Division on Harwood Avenue will help make our diverse and vibrant community even safer, and it will be a vital part of our community infrastructure for decades to come.”
The new division is expected to include frontline patrol operations, a Community Response Unit, criminal investigations, divisional command staff, and dedicated space to support community engagement. The facility will be designed to meet modern policing needs while aligning with regional sustainability and net-zero standards.
Construction of the Ajax Division is anticipated to be completed by 2031, subject to regional approvals and funding. Once operational, the division will provide Ajax residents with access to a full range of policing services within their own community.
Today’s announcement was made during National Police Week, underscoring the importance of partnerships between police, governments, and the communities they serve.
Durham Regional Police Service will continue to engage with regional and community partners as the project progresses and will share updates as future milestones—including groundbreaking—are reached.
