DRPS Welcomes 23 New Recruits

On Thursday, August 20, the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) proudly welcomed 23 new recruits during a graduation ceremony in Whitby. Attended by the Honourable Zee Hamid – Associate Solicitor General for Auto Theft and Bail Reform, the ceremony featured the DRPS Pipes and Drums and the DRPS Choir, as family and friends gathered to celebrate this milestone achievement.

Chief Peter Moreira formally welcomed the graduating class and presented each officer with their badge and a challenge coin engraved with the Oath of Office as a reminder of this oath and the trust placed in each of them by the community they serve. “Every day, residents will place that trust in you. They will call you on some of the worst days of their lives. They will look to you for help, guidance, support, and leadership. The way you treat people matters. Your professionalism matters. Your compassion matters. Your integrity matters. These qualities will shape every interaction you have and every relationship you build within our community and each other,” he said.

The recruits went on to recite their Declaration of Membership, affirming their dedication to serve with integrity and respect. Constable Adam Reed was chosen as valedictorian and delivered heartfelt remarks on behalf of the class. He referenced how 23 strangers have become family and highlighted that what defined this class wasn’t their grades, or fitness but their resilience and ability to stand together.

Constable Carey was recognized with the Allan D. Christiansen Memorial Award, an honour voted on by his peers. The award highlights leadership, positivity, commitment to fitness, and dedication to volunteerism—qualities that reflect Allan D. Christiansen’s lasting legacy.
