A Message to Survivors

If you have experienced sexual assault, what happened was not your fault.

Durham Regional Police Service recognizes that sexual violence is traumatic and that each survivor’s experience is unique. There is no right or wrong way to respond and no requirement to make decisions immediately. You are in control of what happens next.

Sexual Assault Support & Information

Your Choices

You may choose one option, several options, or no option at this time. All choices are respected.

You may choose to seek medical care for injuries, pregnancy or STI concerns, and supportive trauma-informed care. In Ontario, Sexual Assault / Domestic Violence Treatment Centres provide specialized hospital-based care. Receiving medical care does not require reporting to police.

Some survivors choose to report to police; others do not. Both decisions are valid. If you choose to report, there is no time limit, you may bring a support person, and you may pause or stop at any time. Choosing not to report does not affect your access to support services.

Support is available even if you do not want police involved or are unsure about reporting. Services include counselling, crisis support, advocacy, and community-based sexual assault services.
