Connecting Through Soccer: YIP Welcomes Newcomers
On July 16, 2025, the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative hosted their 5th annual Newcomer Soccer Tournament in partnership with the Community Development Council Durham (CDCD).
Designed to foster trust, inclusion, and positive relationships between youth and police, the tournament offered a welcoming space where youth who are new to Canada between the ages of 14 to 24 could engage, play, and feel a sense of belonging.
Bringing together 46 newcomer youth aged 13 to 24, 120 YIP Students/Leaders, and 8 DRPS members, it was a day filled with soccer, team-building activities, and meaningful connection. With soccer as a unifying force, participants engaged in healthy competition while learning the values of teamwork, leadership, and mutual respect.
Superintendent Rob Antaya brought great energy to the opening remarks, sharing enthusiasm on behalf of the DRPS and officially kicking off the event. He set a positive tone for a day focused on community, connection, and collaboration.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success! Special appreciation goes to the CDCD, the Durham District School Board, Whitby FC, and Sergeant Dave Ashfield for their invaluable support and contributions.
Through initiatives like this, YIP and CDCD continue their shared commitment to supporting newcomer youth as they navigate their new environment, empowering them to grow, lead, and thrive as part of the broader Durham community.
