DRPS Auxiliary Officer of the Year

Bridging Passion with Volunteer Work: Carmen Gazo, DRPS Auxiliary Officer of the Year
Being a bridge between the community and law enforcement is a driving force in Carmen Gazo’s decision to be an Auxiliary Officer with the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).
“It’s about wearing this uniform with pride and knowing that I’m contributing, even in a small way, to the safety and well-being of my community,” says Gazo.
National Volunteer week runs from April 23 – May 3, a time when we acknowledge those who selflessly dedicate their time and energy to their communities. Without a doubt, our DRPS Auxiliary Officers exemplify the true meaning and essence of being a volunteer.
This year, the Sharon Bowdring Auxiliary Officer of the Year Award was presented to Auxiliary Cst. Carmen Gazo. This award is given to a member who demonstrates reliability, commitment, presenting a positive and professional image, enthusiasm, being a solid team player and being a good mentor to fellow officers.
Aux Cst. Gazo has demonstrated these characteristics through her actions and commitment since joining the Auxiliary Unit in October 2021. Her colleagues describe her as dependable, someone who goes above and beyond what is expected and always willing to help.
“I feel a calling to volunteer because of my desire to make a difference, to connect with others and to bring a sense of purpose to my life,” explains Gazo. “It allows me to give back to the community and make a positive impact for others when it matters most.”
That positive impact can surely be seen and felt by all Auxiliary Officers, from the events they attend to the people they come in contact with. Impacts that turn into the most memorable moments and favourite experiences.
“My favourite part of being an Auxiliary Officer is being a part of an amazing Unit that always has my back and the great feeling of seeing the children’s smiling faces when working at community events,” says Gazo.
This National Volunteer Week, we thank all the DRPS Auxiliary Officers for their continued time, commitment and energy as to making our communities a better place.
