DRPS Welcomes New K9 Team

DRPS Welcomes New K9 Team

DRPS is thrilled to welcome a new team to our K9 Unit. The DRPS K9 Unit is pleased to announce that Constable Thanujaan (TJ) Thavaseelan and Police Service Dog (PSD) Kobe, have completed their basic patrol certification and are ready to report for duty.

PSD Kobe is a 21-month-old German Shepherd who was born in Czech Republic. The team spent 14 weeks in intensive training, certifying in numerous disciplines including tracking, building searches, evidence recovery. and obedience.

Kobe is a quiet, calm, and steady PSD at home or when resting in his kennel. But when duty calls, he shows an intense focus and a confident tracking ability. Interestingly, despite being one of the two largest K9s in the unit at 78 pounds, Kobe is also the quietest. His silent approach allows him to search rooms and move in on subjects undetected. On his days off, Kobe loves playing fetch and tug-of-war with his handler, TJ. His absolute favourite toy is his KONG ball on a rope.

Cst. Thavaseelan and Kobe will be patrolling Durham Region as members of D platoon.
