Unidentified Female Human Remains Found

*Updated rendering

Investigators continue to look for the identity of an unknown female, whose remains were located in Bowmanville in 2006.

On October 27, 2006, the remains of a female were discovered in a field near South Service Road and Holt Road, in Clarington. Forensic investigators determined the woman was likely between 18 to 25-years of age. It was originally thought that the victim was either Caucasian or of Indigenous descent. The DRPS reached out to the DNA Doe Project Inc. and genetic genealogy suggests the female is of African and South-East Asian descent.

Although the female's remains were not found until 2006, it is estimated that she could have died anytime between 1980 and 2004. She had prominent upper teeth and there was evidence of recent nasal surgery. Originally found with the body was a woman's digital Omni watch with a stainless-steel band which was sold exclusively at Consumers Distributing from 1981 to 1983. Also found near the remains was a uniquely large, size 9" gold ring with a garnet between two one-point diamonds on either side. The word "Burns" was stamped inside and the ring is believed to have been sold by Burns Jewelers, a family-run business on Simcoe Street in Oshawa from 1923 to 1994. The ring was made by A&A Manufacturing in Toronto.

A sketch of the unidentified female provided by the DNA Doe Project is attached or can be viewed at our website at www.drps.ca under Newsroom. Pictures of the evidence found are also attached.

This remains an unsolved investigation from 2006.

PREVIOUS RELEASE:

On Friday October 27, 2006, a man discovered human remains while walking in a field near the South Service Road and Holt Road in Clarington. The Forensic Identification Unit, with the guidance from a Forensic Anthropologist from the Coroner’s Office, completed an archeological dig of the area, and located further remains, as well as a ladies watch. In 2010, a new search was conducted of the scene where the remains were located. This search has yielded new artifacts including a ladies gold ring with a garnet and two diamonds, as well as several clothing items. The clothing items include a multi-coloured short sleeved shirt with a hood and a portion of a pair of grey track pants with elastic cuff. The remains are of a female between the ages of 18-30 years of age and they had been at the body recovery scene between two and 10 years, or possibly longer. The information was uploaded onto the OPP Project RESOLVE website, and a 3-dimensional clay model of the skull and a digital reconstruction of the deceased were completed. The identity of the deceased is unknown, and the case remains unsolved.
