YIP’s 7th Annual C.A.N. Conference
DRPS’ Youth in Policing (YIP) Students finished the winter program strong with their final event, the C.A.N. (Community Advocacy and Networking) Conference on Saturday, March 25th, 2023.
This was YIP’s 7th semi-annual C.A.N. Conference which focused on providing our 70 soon-to-be graduating YIP students an opportunity to learn more about personal and professional development opportunities as they move forward.
The theme for this year’s conference was Community, highlighting the importance of community involvement and engagement. Youth learned how to become ambassador’s of change through the breadth of opportunities provided at YIP and across the Durham Region.
During the first half of the day, participants had the opportunity to engage in a variety of professional development activities including, mock interviews, resume building sessions, and workshops focusing on workplace scenarios.
The afternoon portion of the conference was open to the public and over 180 youth from across Durham Region attended. Participants had an opportunity to network with volunteer, employment, and support organizations. Long-standing YIP partners attended, including Toastmasters, Footprints4Autism, Victim Services Durham Region, Carea Community Health Centre, Nova’s Ark, Durham YMCA, Blenda’s Wellness, Ontario Power Generation, DRPS Traffic Services Unit, and the DRPS Recruiting Unit. The attendees also had the opportunity to explore the DRPS Marine Unit boat, DRPS Collision Investigative Vehicle, and the Ontario Power Generation Fire and Security Vehicle.
Thank you to all our attendees and community organizations for your support in this event. YIP is happy to work together to continue to create opportunities for our youth across the Durham Region.
YIP is a paid opportunity for Durham youth aged 15-18. The program has been running since 2006 in partnership with Ontario's Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS).
