Combating Carjackings

Carjackings have been on the rise across the Greater Toronto Area. In response, Durham Regional Police has joined a new task force, dubbed Operation GTA, that will co-ordinate prevention and enforcement efforts with our policing partners.

Carjackings are often violent and affect the larger community, as well as the victims involved. Vehicle owners are encouraged to consider the following safety tips:

  • Trust your instincts and be aware of your surroundings.
  • If you see a suspicious vehicle in your neighbourhood, either parked or circling, report it to our non-emergency line at 1-888-579-150.
  • If you suspect you are being followed, call 9-1-1.
  • If you are approached by thieves, remain calm and comply. Don’t fight back. Call 9-1-1 as soon as possible.
  • Park your vehicle in a locked garage whenever possible.
  • Consider purchasing a quality video surveillance system and exterior lighting for your home.
