Hire a Pay Duty Officer
Off-duty police officers are available for hire to provide a visible police presence for a wide range of events and activities.
General Terms
- Advance notice of at least 48 hours is required for standard requests. Short-notice requests will be considered only in special circumstances. While every effort will be made to accommodate requests, fulfillment is not guaranteed; advance notice helps the Service fulfill requests.
- Requests to cancel must be submitted at least 24 hours in advance and sent via email to payduty@drps.ca. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice will be subject to a three-hour minimum charge per officer, plus the applicable administrative fee and taxes.
- All events must take place within the Durham Region.
- Events involving alcohol require a minimum of two (2) officers.
- The number of officers and cruisers assigned to an event will be determined based on the nature, size, and risk level of the duty.
- All officers will attend in full uniform only. Plainclothes assignments are not available.
Available Functions
- Civic or community events (Indoor/Outdoor)
- Concerts
- Film productions, including traffic control and access or perimeter security related to public safety
- Funeral escort
- Grand openings
- Municipal activities and requirements
- Parades and Festivals
- Private functions
- Road Construction
- School events
- Sporting events
- Traffic control
- Traffic escorts for wide or oversized loads (permits may be required).
Prohibited Functions
Paid Duty Officers cannot be assigned to:
- Private policing at premises holding a permanent liquor license issued by the AGCO where the primary purpose of the business is the sale of alcohol.
- Supervision of special effects functions involving explosives, pyrotechnics, tactical operations, or firearms, including assignments requiring Tactical Support Officers.

- A 20% administration fee, plus applicable HST, will be added to all paid duty assignments.
- Police cruisers are subject to availability and charged at a $100 minimum (three hours), with $38.00 per hour thereafter.
- A minimum three-hour charge applies to all officers and vehicles assigned to a paid duty.
- Requests made within 24 hours of the scheduled duty date will be subject to a $60.30 per hour rate, plus applicable taxes.
Payment
- Full payment is required in advance and must be made payable to the Durham Regional Police Service. Accepted payment methods include credit card and certified cheque.
- Credit card details (Visa or MasterCard) must be provided on the “Paid Duty Request & Terms of Agreement” form. The application will not be accepted unless it is accompanied by full payment to the Durham Regional Police Service in advance of the requested duty.
Submitting a Request
Customers will need to download and complete the Pay Duty Request & Terms of Agreement form, then email it to payduty@drps.ca. The assignment of officers for the request is not guaranteed, and the Durham Regional Police Service reserves the right to determine the minimum number of officers and cruisers to ensure best practices and sufficient police resources.
